This Is Not Decay

This is my first sculpture! I am very happy with the results and it was a blast to make, so much that I now see sculpture as a main medium for my work. This was made for my intro sculpting class.

The assignment was to juxtapose a manmade thing against a natural thing, so for this piece I chose to blur that line entirely. It is arguable that either side of this sculpture is either natural or manmade and the process of the change can be defined as a natural or artificial process depending on your point of view and bias.

The goal of this piece was to highlight the controversy around change, specifically in regard to societal roles placed on people based on their sex, gender, or appearance and how that contrasts with our own sense of who we are and how we define change. Some people would define the process of becoming one’s self as self destruction, while others see it as acceptance of a true self and a necessary step towards living a happy life.
